Mirtos is off the beaten track and lies 15 kilometer west of Ierapetra, the long beach looks over the beautiful Libyan Sea.

Popular by the Greeks themselves as a beachside retreat away from the crowds, Mirtos has a sleepy feel for most of the summer, and make an excellent base for exploring the south-east corner of Crete by rental car. The small boulevard offers you a number of fine tavernas. Relaxing into the slow pace of the Cretan village life with a good book, civilised company, is what holidays to Crete are all about.

It’s very nice to take a stroll through the village. The music you hear is Greek or Cretan almost everywhere. You will also discover that Mirtos has a lot to offer, in spite of the fact that it is only a village. To name its most important facilities:

Knossos: Most famous excavation of Crete, close to Heraklion.
Phaistos: Famous excavation close to Matala
Kato Zakros: A minoan palace in the extreme east of the island
Gournia: Minoan village between Aghios Nicolaos and Pahia Amnos.
Spinalonga: The famous leprosy island in opposite of Elounda.

Chrissi Island: Famous island south of Ierapetra. In the summer daily boat connections.
Aghios Nicolaos: A city with more movement in the north, about 45 minutes of Mirtos
Lassithi Plateau: Big plateau with the famous windmills
Sitia: A nice port place at about a 1,5 hour drive
Heraklion: The capital of Crete with a lot of sightseeings, at about 1,5 hour drive.
Vai: The famous palm beach in the east.
Aquasplash: Waterfun for young and a bit older.
